Frequently Asked Questions

Find out more about why VitalPACS is a great solution for your veterinary hospital with the following frequently asked questions:

What does VitalPACS offer?

VitalPACS images are not only remotely archived but you can also view all of your images from any device (PC, MAC, iPad, tablet or smart phone) at anytime, anywhere you have internet access. This means you can access all images from your office, your exam rooms, and your home. You can view your images (from any modality such as radiographs, ultrasound, CT and MRI), you also have image manipulation tools available with our web based viewer. This option opens up a whole new world to most veterinarians and is a very economical way to expand the limits of your existing capability to view images.

What does PACS stand for?

PACS stands for Picture Archiving and Communication System. It’s a digital imaging system used in radiology, to store, retrieve, and distribute medical images.

Why Would I need the PACS Option?

Do you have a new graduate associate veterinarian? Have you ever hired a relief vet that just might need some advice? Have you ever had to make a trip to your clinic just to look at some radiographs? Have you ever learned the hard way that your current “PACS” software is really not a true “PACS” software, and that you are not able to view any other modalities besides radiographs (i.e., you cannot view ultrasound video clips, you cannot do stack imaging with any CT or MRI studies)? With VitalPACS, you can alleviate all of these headaches.

How long does VitalPACS keep my images?

VitalPACS will store your images for 7 years, as long as you remain and active VitalPACS Customer.  We do reserve the right to compress the stored images, however, the images will still be of very high quality (you will likely not even be able to tell the image are compressed at all when looking at them).

Do I need VitalPACS if my data is backed up every night with my practice management system?

Yes, Most practice management software only backs up your written electronic medical records, but not your medical images. Some offer this ability at a significant extra monthly fee. Rarely, even if you back up your medical images, do you have the ability to actually look at your own images from any location on any device.

Can I load VitalPACS on more than one computer or device?

VitalPACS is cloud based, therefore does not require any local “loading”. You can access VitalPACS on as many devices as you need.

How do I get my images back?

We’ve got your back! Not only that, but if you lose your imaging data, we won’t charge you an extra fee to get your images back (since you’ve already made a payment, we won’t charge you extra to retrieve your images). All you have to do is send VitalPACS an empty, adequately sized portable USB hard drive, and we will copy your images onto it and send it back to you. If needed, we will also be more than happy to assist you on how to reload your images to your system. You will need to pay for shipping (send and return) the hard drive.

What are the system requirements for VitalPACS?

It’s pretty simple here: VitalPACS is web-based software, so you don’t need to download any software to your computer to run use VitalPACS. You will need a relatively new computer, however, either a PC or MAC, that is running an up-to-date browser (Firefox or Chrome; MS Edge will also work). You can view your images on any device such as computer, iPad, PC tablet, Android tablet or smartphone.

Can I archive my practice’s older images?

Yes, you can. We charge the same fee per case to store all of your old cases. Depending on the capabilities of the modality software and the volume, this could be done over the wire or preferably with a removable hard drive. You are sent a monthly invoice from VitalPACS.
